Nasik Cave 3: Entrance Wall

INDIA, Maharashtra, Aurangabad

This relief is located around the entrance to the cave. The design resembles the gateway found at Sanchi Stupa 1, depicting two lintels supported by two columns. Mythical creatures are carved on the two corners of the lintel. Six rectangular shallow niches housing guardians are located on each side of the entrance. At the top, a stupa is located at the center and flanked by attendants, a Bodhi tree, a Dharma wheel, and disciples on the far end of each side. All these images are divided by pilasters. A row of Dharma wheels is depicted above these images, and below is a lotus pattern.
