CHINA, Sichuan, Guangyuan; Tang dynasty

Located on the upper left beside the main statue on the back wall, this carving depicts Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva seated in relaxation posture on a raised throne. The Bodhisattva has a wide forehead, a prominent nose, long earlobes, and partially closed eyes. The general appearance of the figure is that of a monk. A thin monastic robe is draped over the left shoulder. One arm rests in the lap holding a jewel, while the other holds the stem of a lotus bud. Behind the head, there is a nimbus topped with a canopy.
