This image is located on the ceiling of Niche E, west of the East Buddha Niche in the Bamiyan Valley. It dates to around the 8th century.
The niche features the remains of a destroyed seated Buddha with a nimbus behind the head. The mural depicts a seated Maitreya Bodhisattva with four ribbons hanging down onto the shoulders, turning up at the ends. The Bodhisattva’s right hand forms a mudra at the chest, while the left hand rests upon the lap. A stole which flutters in the wind, a beaded necklace, and a bracelet all adorn the figure.
