Xiaoxitian Temple Great Hero Hall: Vairocana Buddha Niche

CHINA, Shanxi, Linfen; Ming dynasty

The niche is the fourth one, counting from the left, on the back (west) wall of the Great Hero Hall. The central figure is Vairocana Buddha who is flanked by Manjusri and Samantabhadra. This combination is referred to as the Avatamsaka Triad. There is an intricate pavilion behind them in the niche, that contains alternating figures of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
The Buddha is seated cross-legged on a many-layered lotus throne, forming the uttarabodhi (supreme enlightenment) mudra with both hands. The crowned Bodhisattvas on either side stand upon lotus pedestals and hold out a hand towards the Buddha. The way in which their stoles and turned down skirts are arranged became popular during the Yuan (1271–1368) and Ming (1368–1644) dynasties. Behind them, there are vases with a multicolored floral tracery that borders the side of the niche.
