Tuyoq Cave 20: Ceiling and North Wall

Tuyoq Cave 20

CHINA, Xinjiang, Turpan

This rectangular meditation cave is located on the west side of the Tuyoq Ravine, and dates to the period of the Qu family (499–640) ruling over Gaochang. It is similar in style to the Turpan resident architecture, most of which have a small meditation cell behind a main shrine.
Images of constellations and apsaras scattering flowers are depicted on the ceiling of the main chamber. Square images with scenes of ponds, trees, lotus flowers, ducks, and fish are found along the top of the walls. The right side of the back wall has a mural of a large building where a monk holds a bell and striker on the roof. Images of additional monks, one riding an ox and the other in meditation, can be seen on the south wall. Pictured beside a meditating monk are images of his visions, along with a description written in Chinese. Still distinguishable amidst the visions are a pillar, leaves, and water.
The mural on the north wall depicts the story of Sumagadha’s invitation, where the Buddha and his disciples arrive on clouds. The upper register features images of cows, peacocks, phoenixes, and dragons.
