Bingling Temple Cave 132: Maitreya Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Linxia; Northern Wei dynasty

This statue of Maitreya Bodhisattva is located on the north wall. Maitreya wears a headdress, long robe, and a stole which crosses through a ring in front of the waist. The nimbus and mandorla behind the Bodhiattva were repainted during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). Below the figure is a small warrior who squats with arms raised, each hand supporting one of the Bodhisattva’s feet. The warrior wears a small headdress and boots. This sculpture demonstrates careful attention to detail and a high level of skill, evidenced in the fine features of the Bodhisattva’s garment, and the fact that the legs are faintly visible beneath the robes.
