Chakdara: Seated Bodhisattva

PAKISTAN, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Chakdara

This Gandharan statue was excavated from the monastery ruins at Chat Pat, Chakdara. The figure appears to be leaning forward and gazing downwards. The Bodhisattva has a nimbus and a prominent topknot. The face is framed by plaited hair covering both ears that are adorned with a pair of spherical earrings. The face is round with an urna, large eyes, bulbous nose, mustache, and full lips that are characteristics of the Swat region. The Bodhisattva is seated on a square throne, whose upper edge is decorated with a pattern representing grass. The presence of the vase in the figure’s left hand leads to speculation that the figure might be Maitreya Bodhisattva, who was also popular during that period.
