Head of a Buddha

THAILAND

The Buddha’s head was from Lopburi and shows distinct Khmer characteristics, suggesting that it was sculpted after the area was incorporated into the neighboring empire. The brows in the broad face have an angular slant above the downcast contemplative eyes and the lips with their slight smile are well-defined. An ornamental band borders the line of the hair, with its ringleted locks leading up to a conical topknot decorated with lotus-petal patterns.
