Qinglong Temple Middle Hall: Dharma Protectors - Left Dharma Protector

Qinglong Temple Middle Hall: Dharma Protectors

CHINA, Shanxi, Yuncheng; Yuan dynasty

The two Dharma protectors painted in the lower register of the west wall in the middle hall are identified by inscriptions as “left Dharma protector” and “right Dharma protector.” The left Dharma protector wears a headdress and a suit of armor. He has a nimbus decorated with curving flame patterns and is surrounded by swirling clouds. His right hand holds a sword and his left hand grasps the stole draped around his shoulders. The right Dharma protector has a similar appearance, but carries a bow on his shoulder and holds an arrow in each hand.
