Buyeo: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

SOUTH KOREA, South Chungcheong, Buyeo; Baekje period

The sculpture is of Baekje origin and was listed as National Treasure No. 293 in 1997. It depicts a Bodhisattva wearing a three-leaf crown that has a seated Buddha on the front panel. The slender figure stands on an inverted lotus pedestal over which trails the ends of a stole. The Bodhisattva holds a jewel in the right hand while the left hand grasps the stole. Chinese influence is shown in the slight protrusion of the abdomen that creates an elegant curved profile, as well as in the long beaded jewelry that is linked by a medallion.
