Daofen

CHINA, Zhejiang, Shaoxing; Tang dynasty

Daofen was a monk and painter from Kuaiji (present day Shaoxing, Zhejiang). He specialized in illustrating landscapes, pine trees, and rocks, and his works were greatly influenced by the painting style of Zhang Zao, as well as Chan Buddhism. Several poems about his paintings were written during the Tang dynasty (618–907), including a poem by Gu Kuang that described and praised one of his landscape depictions. In the verse, Gu compared Daofen’s works to that of fellow Tang dynasty painting masters, Li Zhaodao and Zhu Sheng. Additionally, Daofen is known to have painted murals in various temples throughout southern China.
