Okcheonsa Temple Judgment Hall: Tripitaka Bodhisattvas

SOUTH KOREA, South Gyeongsang, Goseong; Joseon dynasty

Sponsored by Chibaek and painted by monks including Geumeo and Deunggye, the layout and style of all three pictures are similar, with a Bodhisattva seated in the center on a lotus throne surrounded by various figures. In the painting on the left, Dharanimdhara Bodhisattva is accompanied by Nagarjuna, Dharani Bodhisattva, and deities. The central painting features Devagarbha Bodhisattva flanked by figures including Pearl and Great Pearl Bodhisattvas. Ksitigarbha, depicted in the center of the image on the right, is surrounded by the monk Daoming, Poisonless Ghost King, and the Ten Kings of Hell. The pictures are mainly colored in green and red, a common feature of Joseon dynasty (1382–1910) art.
