Okcheonsa Temple Judgment Hall: Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and Attendants

SOUTH KOREA, South Gyeongsang, Goseong; Joseon dynasty

This artwork was sponsored by Chibaek, a government official, and painted by a group of 14 monks including Geumeo and Deunggye. It is listed as Provincial Tangible Cultural Property No. 299. Ksitigarbha sits on a lotus throne in the center of the painting. The Bodhisattva wears an ornate patterned robe and ornaments. Red ribbons are tied behind the head. The left hand holds a monk’s staff and the right hand supports a transparent jewel. In front of the throne, Poisonless Ghost King stands on the left wearing an orange robe and a hat. The monk Daoming is on the right, dressed in a robe with patterned hems. Both figures join their palms in reverence. Above them, there are eight Bodhisattvas wearing large headdresses topped with flaming jewels.
