Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and Attendants

KOREA; Goryeo dynasty

This painting was listed as Treasure No. 784 in 1984. The central figure, Ksitigarbha, has a square face, a thin mustache, and an urna between the eyebrows. A black cloth secured with a headband is draped over the forehead and behind the ears. The Bodhisattva wears a necklace, bracelets, and a monastic robe outlined with fine golden patterns. The right hand holds a transparent jewel, while the left hand is placed on the knee. A nimbus and mandorla depicted with thin golden lines surround Ksitigarbha. Brahma, Sakra, the Four Heavenly Kings, the monk Daoming, and Poisonless Ghost King stand beside and below the Bodhisattva. They wear decorative armor or robes, and appear peaceful. The brightly colored skin and clothes of the figures stand out against the plain dark background.
