Eunseonri Three-Tier Pagoda

Eunseonri Three-Tier Pagoda

SOUTH KOREA, North Jeolla, Jeongeup

This pagoda is situated in Eunseonri village, which is part of Jeongeup city. Constructed during the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392), the pagoda was listed as Treasure No. 167 in 1963.
This pagoda is 6 m high and has an unusually high first level, which makes it unique in Korea. The base is formed of eight blocks of stone and has a similar design to the base of the Five-Tier Stone Pagoda at Jeongnimsa Temple. The first level of the pagoda body is made up of two high blocks of stone. The second level has a stele and two doors leading to a small chamber on the south face. The first two levels have carvings of pilasters at the corners, but there are no pilasters on the third level. The roofs of each level are formed of layers of square stone slabs. The spire of the pagoda is no longer extant. The shape of the pagoda retains the characteristics of stone pagodas from the Baekje dynasty (18 BCE–663 CE).
