Bosalsa Temple: Assembly at Vulture Peak

SOUTH KOREA, North Chungcheong, Cheongju; Joseon dynasty

This large painting depicting the Dharma assembly at Vulture Peak is meant to be displayed at Buddhist ceremonies. In 1997, it was listed as Treasure No. 1258.
Sakyamuni Buddha sits in full lotus position in the middle of the painting, surrounded by a patterned nimbus and mandorla. He has a low usnisa, piercing narrow eyes, long ears, and a small mouth. The red monastic robe is painted with fine details, especially the lotus-shaped folds near the ankle. The hands form the bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. Beside the Buddha, there are images of Manjusri, Samantabhadra, and six other Bodhisattvas, as well as Brahma, Sakra, the Four Heavenly Kings, and great disciples. A Bodhisattva is shown kneeling in front of the Buddha, listening respectfully to the Dharma.
