Chaoite
This stele is the smallest of three found in 1960. The people of Baekje commissioned the carvings, after the fall of the Baekje Kingdom (18 BCE–663 CE), according to the inscription on the other two pieces. The work began in 673 and was completed in 689. The sculpture was listed as Treasure No. 368 in 1963.
All four sides of the stele are carved in relief. A contemplative Maitreya is on the front, shaded by a foliated canopy supported on columns. The Bodhisattva is depicted seated between hanging tassels and has a radiating circular nimbus. An incense burner is at the foot of the stele, with devotees making offerings on either side. The two sides continue the scene on the front. On one side, a Bodhisattva in stoles is standing on a lotus and turned towards Maitreya, while a devotee is kneeling below, both of which join celebrants on the other side.
