Pyochungsa Temple Three-Tier Pagoda

Pyochungsa Temple Three-Tier Pagoda

SOUTH KOREA, South Gyeongsang, Miryang

This pagoda is located in front of the Hall of Great Resolve at Pyochungsa Temple. Built during the Unified Silla dynasty (668–935), the pagoda was listed as Treasure No. 467 in 1968.
The pagoda is 7.7 m high and stands on a high base. The base consists of three layers: the base platform is very low; the middle layer is much higher and is made of vertical stone slabs with square pillars at the corners and between the slabs; and the upper part of the base is composed of horizontal stone slabs, upon which rests the body of the pagoda. The first tier of the pagoda body is similar in height to the base and is much taller than the upper tiers. Each tier and each roof is made from a single piece of stone. There are pilasters at each corner. Under each roof there are four layers of corbeling. The eaves are slightly upturned at the corners, from which hang small bells. The spire consists of a base, an inverted bowl, a wheel, a canopy, and a finial.
