Ink and color on paper

Haeinsa Temple: Water-Moon Avalokitesvara

SOUTH KOREA, South Gyeongsang, Hapcheon; Joseon dynasty

An inscription at the bottom of this painting of Water-Moon Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva gives the date as 1876. The Bodhisattva is painted in ink and light colors inside a brown circle representing the moon. Above and below the circle, a Sanskrit incantation is written in white against the blue background. Avalokitesvara sits on a rocky outcrop surrounded by water. The Bodhisattva wears a white robe, and has curled hair and a faint nimbus. There is a willow branch in a vase placed upon a rock on the left. A bird can be seen flying above the Bodhisattva on the left.
