Janghangnisa Temple West Five-Tier Pagoda

SOUTH KOREA, North Gyeongsang, Gyeongju

This pagoda was located within an unnamed temple that no longer exists in Janghangni village in Wolseong. The temple originally had two pagodas, one to the east and the other to the west. The pagodas were built in the 8th century during the Unified Silla dynasty (668–935). After they were vandalized in 1923, only the west pagoda was restored to almost its original state. This west pagoda was listed as National Treasure No. 236 in 1987.
The pagoda is 9 m high and stands on a two-layer base. Pilasters are carved on all sides of the base. The first tier of the pagoda body is much taller than the other tiers and has indented panels resembling doors, which are adorned with handles. On either side there are reliefs of standing Dharma protectors. The eaves are upturned at the corners and are decorated with five layers of corbeling. Only the base of the spire is extant.
