Eunhaesa Temple Geojoam Hermitage Sacred Mountain Hall

SOUTH KOREA, North Gyeongsang, Yeongcheon

Sacred Mountain Hall is located within Geojoam Hermitage of Eunhaesa (Silver Ocean Temple). According to the inscription found during repairs in 1972, the hall was built in 1375 during the Goryeo dynasty. It was listed as National Treasure No. 14 in 1962.
The seven-by-three bay hall has a single-eave overhanging gable roof. The roof is supported by a bracket set system whereby bracket sets are placed only on top of the column capitals with no intermediate bracket sets. Inside the hall, there is no ceiling and the highly decorated bracket sets are an important artistic feature, as well as having a structural function. The hall houses a statue of the Buddha and 526 stone statues of Arhats with different expressions and postures, some laughing wholeheartedly while others are in deep contemplation. The architectural style of the building is indicative of the transition from the late Goryeo dynasty (918–1392) to the early Joseon dynasty (1392–1910).
