Unmunsa Temple Magpie Valley Hall: Seated Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, North Gyeongsang, Cheongdo; Goryeo dynasty

The Buddha sits in full lotus position on a hexagonal Sumeru throne decorated with lotus petals. Rising behind it, an intersecting lotus nimbus and aureole are surrounded by flames to create a mandorla. The signs of Buddhahood include the mounded usnisa, mid-forehead urna, and extended earlobes. The Buddha wears a monastic robe over both shoulders, which opens to reveal an inner robe. The figure’s right hand rests over the lower leg in bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. The simplified sculptural style suggests this figure is a carving from the early 10th century. The statue was listed as Treasure No. 317 in 1963.
