Songgwangsa Temple Lower Dormitory

Songgwangsa Temple Lower Dormitory

SOUTH KOREA, South Jeolla, Suncheon

The lower dormitory is located behind the Great Hero Hall of Songgwangsa Temple. The dormitory stands parallel to its counterpart, the upper dormitory, and both face south. Built in 1461 during the Joseon dynasty, it is the oldest existing wooden dormitory in Korea. It was originally built either as the abbot’s living quarters or as meditation dormitory. It was listed as Treasure No. 263 in 1963.
The three-by-two bay dormitory has a single-eave hip-and-gable roof. Its internal area measures 39.7 sq m. During the late Joseon dynasty (1392–1910), the hall was used as a dining place for meditators. Above the kitchen, which is on the right side of the hall, there is an air ventilator in the roof.
