Songgwangsa Temple: Portable Shrine with Buddhas of the Past, Present, and Future

SOUTH KOREA, South Jeolla, Suncheon; Goryeo dynasty

Originally the shrine was in the collection of the 16th National Master, Kobong, who resided at Songgwangsa Temple. It has since been listed as Provincial Tangible Cultural Property No. 28 in South Jeolla.
On the outside of each door, there is a repousse relief of a Dharma protector. On the inside, the doors feature Ksitigarbha and Avalokitesvara Bodhisattvas. Inside the shrine are two rows of repoussés: the upper register features the Buddhas of the Past, Present, and Future, while the lower register has the images of Bodhisattvas and disciples. All the images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are depicted sitting on an upright lotus throne. All images inside the shrine are shown with nimbuses. The two-eave roof is decorated with strings of beads.
