Magoksa Temple: Sakyamuni Buddha Assembly

SOUTH KOREA, South Chungcheong, Gongju; Joseon dynasty

This large painting of Sakyamuni Buddha was listed as Treasure No. 1260 in 1997. The Buddha wears an ornate crown topped with seven small Buddha images. His robes are decorated with colorful patterns and string ornaments. Both hands hold the stem of a large lotus flower. Floral patterns are visible within the aureole. Beside the Buddha’s green nimbus, there are images of Sambhogakaya and Dharmakaya Buddhas.
The Four Heavenly Kings stand at the bottom of the picture. They wear helmets and armor, and each have a unique facial expression. Above them are eight Bodhisattvas led by Dipamkara and Maitreya. At the top of the picture, disciples and heavenly beings are shown against a colorful background.
