Beopjusa Temple: Standing Buddha

Ink and color on linen

Beopjusa Temple: Standing Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, North Chungcheong, Boeun; Joseon dynasty

This large picture was painted in Beopjusa Temple and remains one of the temple’s most treasured properties. In 1997, it was listed as Treasure No. 1259.
The Buddha wears richly decorated robes and an ornate headdress topped with flaming wish-fulfilling jewels. He stands on lotus pedestals and holds a white flower with both hands. Flowers and clouds embellish the aureole. More colorful clouds are painted around the outside of the nimbus. Two curving lines of white light rise from the top of the headdress and extend into the top corners.
