Jueji Yongzhong

CHINA, Jiangsu, Suzhou; Yuan dynasty

Jueji Yongzong was a monk and painter from Pingjiang (present day Suzhou, Jiangsu). His painting style was lively and precise, drawn with concise and fluid lines. Jueji’s depiction of Avalokitesvara in a White Robe is currently kept at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. The painting includes an inscription by Master Zhongfeng Mingben, which suggests that he and Jueji were both disciples of Chan Master Gaofeng Yuanmiao of the Linji school of Chan Buddhism.
