Jeondeungsa Temple Medicine Buddha Hall

Jeondeungsa Temple Medicine Buddha Hall

SOUTH KOREA, Incheon

The Medicine Buddha Hall is situated to the west of the Great Hero Hall at Jeondeungsa (Temple of Light Transmission). The hall was built between the middle and late Joseon dynasty (1392–1910). It was listed as Treasure No. 179 in 1963.
Built on a three-layer base platform, the three-by-two bay hall is a small-scale building with a single-eave hip-and-gable roof. The bracket sets on the column capitals are simple. The cantilever tips, which are similar in style to those of the Great Hero Hall, are believed to have been made at the same time. The ceiling is coffered and the sloping sides are decorated with lotus flower and vine designs. It has diamond-shaped lattice windows. A stone statue of the Medicine Buddha, sculpted in the late Goryeo dynasty (918–1392), is enshrined in the hall. Behind the statue there is a painting of the Medicine Buddha and his attendants, Suryaprabha and Candraprabha Bodhisattvas, done in 1884.
