Jeondeungsa Temple: Tidal View Building

Jeondeungsa Temple

SOUTH KOREA, Incheon

Jeondeungsa, which means Temple of Light Transmission, is located on the strategic island of Ganghwado. The temple is said to have been built in 381 during the Goryeo dynasty by royal monk Ado. The temple has been repaired and reconstructed many times throughout its history. Most of the existing buildings were rebuilt after 1621.
The major structures of the temple include the Great Hero Hall, Medicine Buddha Hall, Ultimate Bliss Hall, Tidal View Building, Judgment Hall, Hall of the Three Sages, and bell tower.
The Great Hero Hall contains 104 wooden printing blocks of the Lotus Sutra granted by Jeongsusa Temple in 1544 during the Joseon dynasty. The 164 cm iron bell, cast in 1097, came from Chongming Temple in Henan, China. It was listed as Treasure No. 393 in 1963.
