Hwagyesa Temple: Great Hero Hall

Hwagyesa Temple

SOUTH KOREA, Seoul

Hwagyesa, or Beautiful Creek Temple, is situated on Samgaksan (Three Corners Mountain). The temple was founded in 1522 during the Joseon dynasty by Master Shinwol. It was later rebuilt by Master Dowol after it was destroyed by fire in 1618. Most of the present buildings date back to 1866 of the Joseon dynasty, when the temple was repaired by monks Yongso and Pomun.
The buildings of the temple include the Great Hero Hall, Avalokitesvara Hall, Judgment Hall and Mountain Deity Shrine. The three-by-three bay Great Hero Hall, rebuilt in 1866, has a single-eave hip-and-gable roof. Inside, it houses statues of Sakyamuni Buddha, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva.
