Horyuji Temple: Shrine with Amitabha Buddha Triad

JAPAN, Nara, Ikoma; Hakuho period

This Amitabha Buddha Triad was listed as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
The wooden cabinet is 39.1 cm high and 31.6 cm wide. Amitabha Buddha is depicted in the center seated in full lotus position on an upright lotus throne with his hands in Dharmacakra (Dharma wheel) mudra. On either side, is Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattvas. The former has a Buddha image in their headdress, while the other has a vase. All three images have nimbuses. At the back, there are two monks facing Amitabha Buddha with joined palms. Above the images is an elaborate canopy with flaming medallions; the original canopy is missing and has been replaced. On the surface of Amitabha Buddha, there are traces of gold which have become blackened. The roof of the cabinet is in the shape of an inverted boat with eaves below. There are faint images on the doors of the cabinet.
