Namsan Mireukgok: Seated Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, North Gyeongsang, Gyeongju; Unified Silla dynasty

The Buddha sits on a circular lotus mounted on an octagonal support that rests upon an inverted lotus. He is in full lotus position with his right hand making the bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. His monastic robe covers both shoulders and is deeply cut with regular folds. The rim of the mandorla behind the figure is patterned with flames and surrounds a nimbus and aureole decorated with rosettes. Seven Buddha images are incorporated into the nimbus and aureole. A relief of the Medicine Buddha is on the back of the mandorla. The statue was listed as Treasure No. 136 in 1963.
