Daeseungsa Temple: Seated Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, North Gyeongsang, Mungyeong; Goryeo dynasty

The Buddha is carved in low relief and depicted sitting in full lotus position on a lotus throne. He wears a monastic robe and raises his right hand. The aureole about the body is indicated by line incisions that intersect with a round nimbus above. The cloud-shaped steam that appear to burst from the Buddha’s head are particularly noteworthy. The work, an example of late Goryeo dynasty low reliefs, is listed as Provincial Tangible Cultural Property No. 239.
