Xiao Su

Red-character rectangular seal

Xiao Su

CHINA; Qing dynasty

Carved in small seal script, the two characters of this name seal were set in a vertical layout. The thin, curvaceous characters were executed in round-relief and appear sturdy yet graceful. Unlike most seals made during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), the composition is not bound by the restrictions of Qin and Han seal styles, resulting in a lively and vivid piece. Cut in a nimble and subtle style with a tranquil and refreshing spirit, this work is one of superior standard.
A native of Hangzhou, Zhejiang, Jianchu was a monk and seal engraver of the Qing dynasty who was also known as Laitang. He obtained the skill of using the cutting stylus from Chen Hongshou, one of the Eight Masters of Xiling.
