Sakyamuni Buddha Triad

CHINA

This pictorial seal was carved as a dedication for the artist’s deceased wife to be reborn in the Western Pure Land. It features an image of Sakyamuni Buddha seated in full lotus position with attending Bodhisattvas standing on either side. Laid out with a sense of expansiveness, the composition demonstrates the incomparable vastness of Buddhist philosophy.
Lai Chusheng was originally named Jixun, and also known as Fu, among other aliases. A native of Xiaoshan, Zhejiang, he was skilled in poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal engraving. It was said by the contemporary seal engraver, calligrapher, and painter, Qian Juntao, that Lai was the only artist who held his own in the field of seal engraving during the 1970s.
