Take Refuge in the Triple Gem

White-character square seal

Take Refuge in the Triple Gem

CHINA

Taking refuge in the Triple Gem means to find safety and comfort in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha; in essence, it means to become a follower of Buddhism. This square seal illustrating the above concept takes after the layout of Han seals, with a touch of ancient style and a smooth and gentle cutting method.
Ma Heng, also known as Suping or Wujiu, was a native of Ningbo, Zhejiang. He was skilled in poetry, calligraphy, and seal engraving, in addition to being an expert in archaeology and epigraphy. Ma’s seal works broadly employed the styles of the early Zhou dynasty (1046–256 BCE), as well as those of the Qin (221–207 BCE) and Han (206 BCE–220 CE) dynasties. His techniques were excellent and his works complete in both style and spirit. An early member of Xiling Seal Art Society, Ma was its second president.
