White-character square seal
The Diamond Sutra shares the story of the Buddha’s disciple, Subhuti, who is praised for his deep understanding of emptiness and having attained non-confronting samadhi. Moreover, Subhuti is highly regarded as the foremost Arhat in practicing non-attachment.
This seal can be considered unconventional in the composition of its six characters. In accordance with the traditional Zhejiang school layout of Han style works, it should consist of three rows with two characters in each. However, breaking conventions, the two characters for “wo” (I) and “de” (attained) appear on the right side of the seal, while the three characters representing “confronting samadhi” comprise the left. Boldly stated in the center, as if to imply emphasis, is “wu” (non).
Chen Yuzhong was a seal engraver of the Qing dynasty (1644–1911). A native of Hangzhou, Zhejiang, he was renowned as one of the Eight Masters of Xiling, and together with Chen Hongshou, he comprises one half of the Two Chens of Qiantang.
