White-character square seal
The quote, “Attain Ease in Meditation,” came from Collection of Elder Hanshan’s Visionary Travels, which advocates the attainment of liberation through actively emptying the mind of attachments in meditation practice.
This seal features a character structure that is exhibited by a square script and engraved with the Zhejiang school method of cutting, imparting the art piece with a sense of stability and a fluid flow. Knife work is steady, elegant, and strong. The deliberate use of clerical script as the basis of the seal composition enables the work to come alive, as is indicated on the side colophon “lively in artistic conception.”
Huang Yi, was also known as Xiaosong or Qiu’an, was a Qing dynasty (1644–1911) seal engraver, calligrapher, and painter from Hangzhou, Zhejiang.
