Xuxing

CHINA, Jiangsu, Suzhou; Qing dynasty

Xuxing, originally named Luo Deyuan and also known as Mohuachan, was a monk and seal engraver from Kunshan, Suzhou. He renounced at a young age and resided at Yuanjin Temple in Shanghai. Aside from Chan practice and chanting, he mastered the skills of seal engraving. Even Zong Wenpeng and Wang Guan commented that their skills were incomparable to Xuxing’s. His work was also praised by Wang Chang as being simple and down-to-earth, befitting the criteria of Chan art and possessing the artistic expression of seal engraving.
Seal Collections of Feihongtang listed several Xuxing’s works, and he also authored Seal Prints of Ink Flower Chan.
