Head of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

THAILAND / CAMBODIA

The sculpture feature characteristics from the late Angkor period (circa 9th–15th century), when the Khmers ruled Lopburi. The Bodhisattva has a tall, cone-shaped topknot on which rests a seated Amitabha Buddha. Numerous rows of plaited hair has been framed by a distinct band that surrounds a board forehead. The facial features are centered at the bottom half of the head, showing jointed eyebrows, a board nose, and a mouth with thick lips that emphasizes the figure’s smile.
