Dashan, also known as Shilian or Shihu, was a monk, painter, and poet from Wuxian (present day Suzhou, Jiangsu). He resided at Changshou Temple in Guangdong, and expanded Puji Chan Monastery in Macau between 1689 and 1692. Skilled in depicting landscapes and flowers, his paintings elegantly portrayed the essence of Chan and were highly regarded.
He was invited to teach the Dharma in Vietnam by King Nguyen Phuc Chu (reigned 1691–1725), who greatly respected him. After returning to China, he wrote a book Records of Overseas Events. Many of the poems he composed were published in the Collection of Liliu Hall.
