Lianxing Temple White Stupa

Lianxing Temple White Stupa

CHINA, Jiangsu, Yangzhou

Lianxing means Lotus Nature. The stupa is located within Xihu Park. It was built during the rule of Emperor Qianlong (reigned 1736–1795) of the Qing dynasty and repaired during the rule of Emperor Guangxu (reigned 1875–1908) of the same dynasty. It is also called the White Pagoda. It was listed as a Municipal Cultural Heritage Site in 1962.
This Tibetan brick stupa faces south and is 25.8 m high. It stands on a high square base platform, which is surrounded by low balustrades at ground level. At the front there are two sets of steps leading up to the top of the base platform, which is enclosed by low balustrades. The body of the stupa rests on a brick Sumeru base, which is decorated with exquisite carvings of floral patterns. The body is surmounted by a hexagonal harmika followed by 13 stacked rings. At the top there is a hexagonal canopy with bells hanging from its corners. The finial is made of bronze and is in the shape of a gourd.
