Yungang Grotto 10: Ceiling of the Window

CHINA, Shanxi, Datong; Northern Wei dynasty

These carvings are located on the ceiling of the window. It features a lotus flower with white, yellow, and blue petals surrounded by eight apsaras radiating out from the center. The apsaras appear as both adults with high usnisas, and as children. They are depicted in graceful, dynamic postures which give the appearance of dancing or flying. The light-colored garments of the figures contrast with the rich, red background, and make the image particularly striking.
