Yungang Grotto 9: Cross-Ankled Bodhisattva Niche

CHINA, Shanxi, Datong; Northern Wei dynasty

Situated in the middle tier on the left side of the back (north) wall within the front chamber, this trapezoidal niche is decorated with a column on each side and apsaras on the lintel. The cross-ankled Bodhisattva within the niche sits on a throne, flanked by a lion on each side. The Bodhisattva wears a long garment draped over one shoulder, a headdress decorated with a Buddha image, a stole, and ornaments including necklaces and armlets. The nimbus features lotus petals and flame patterns, while the oblong mandorla is decorated with flames and Buddha images. The hexagonal columns on either side are adorned with honeysuckle patterns, and the capitals are carved in a style resembling the Greek ionic style.
