Yungang Grotto 2: Pagodas

CHINA, Shanxi, Datong; Northern Wei dynasty

Located on either side of the niche in the east wall, these multi-story pagodas are carved to imitate wooden structures. Only the upper portions of the carvings remain intact. Beneath the eaves of each story, a niche draped with curtains contains three small figures. The figure in the uppermost story is seated with legs crossed at the ankles and flanked by two standing attendants. A figure in the middle story is seated with legs pendent. A Sumeru throne carved on the roof contains a child being reborn among plantain leaves. A spire with stacked rings is carved at the very top of each structure. Two long banners hang down on each side of the spire.
