Yungang Grotto 17: Attendant Bodhisattva

CHINA, Shanxi, Datong; Northern Wei dynasty

Located on the left side of the main niche on the second tier of the front (south) wall, this Bodhisattva faces towards the niche in a slightly sinuous posture, and is a mirror image of the Bodhisattva figure on the opposite side. This figure has a full face, partially closed eyes, and a slight smile. The Bodhisattva wears a headdress carved with a Buddha image, a string of beads, Dharma wheels on each side, and two apsaras supporting a crescent moon. A ribbon on each side of the headdress is depicted as if blowing in the wind. Ornaments are worn on the body, including earrings, a collar, necklaces, armlets, and bracelets. The clothing consists of a draped stole and a long, flowing garment.
