Stele of Monk Daoyin at Duobao Temple by Ouyang Tong (detail); Tang dynasty, dated 663

Ouyang Tong

CHINA, Hunan, Changsha; Tang dynasty

Ouyang Tong, also known as Shitong, was a calligrapher and official from Linxiang, Tanzhou (present day Changsha). The son of renowned calligrapher Ouyang Xun, he was taught the skill by his mother after his father passed away while he was still young.
Ouyang and his father were known as Senior and Junior Ouyang. According to Colophon of Guangchuan Writings, while his brush strokes were not as delicate as that of his father’s, they show a resemblance to them. His works include the inscription on Stele of Monk Daoyin at Duobao Temple, which is now kept at the Xi’an Beilin Museum in Shaanxi.
