Tangjiaotou Tomb 4: Seated Buddha

CHINA, Hubei, Ezhou; Western Jin dynasty

This statuette was excavated from Tangjiaotou Tomb 4 in Ezhou, Hubei. It was found in the corridor leading to the rear chamber of the tomb. Dating from the Western Jin dynasty (265–316), this is one of the earliest Buddha statuettes from the middle region of the Yangtze River. The light brown colored statuette is 20.6 cm high. The figure has a unisa and round face. The robe covers both shoulders and forms U-shaped folds on the chest. The Buddha is seated in full lotus position with hands placed together in front of the abdomen.
