Liao Hongbiao

CHINA, Guangdong, Foshan

Liao Hongbiao is a Chinese potter who began to learn his craft under his father, Liao Zuomin, when he was young. He was sent to the Asia Academy of Arts and Design at Tsinghua University in 1957, and later studied under Master of Chinese Arts, Liu Chuan. Under the guidance of Liu, Liao mixed traditional Chinese style with Western techniques and developed his own bold and free sculpting style.
Dedicated to his work, Liao practiced meditation in order to achieve the appropriate state of mind and body ease when molding statues of the Buddha. His works won a total of 44 awards, 14 of which were state awards and 7 provincial, several of which were awarded to his seated Buddha. In addition, his works have been displayed and judged in exhibitions around the world. Liao was honored with the title Master of Arts of Guangzhou in 1986, and was later named Master of Chinese Arts in 1993. In 2002, he was appointed as a Master of Chinese Pottery, representing the craftsmanship of Shiwan Pottery Art and China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Foshan Pottery Art.
Several of Liao’s works, such as Arhat at Ease, are kept at various museums around China, including the National Museum of China in Beijing; the Guangdong Provincial Museum in Guangzhou; and the Hong Kong Museum of Art, among others. Statuette of Ascetic Sakyamuni is currently kept at the Xinshiwan Fine Arts Ceramics Factory in Foshan, Guangdong.
