Diamond Sutra

This manuscript of the Diamond Sutra was scripted by Ling Mengchu using both cursive and running scripts. This deviated from typical use of regular script, which was a neat and orderly style that represented a reverent and austere attitude towards sutra transcription. Yet, the presence of circular punctuation, which symbolizes line breaks, suggests that the scroll was used as recitation material. This practical application reflects a form of dedication and thoughtfulness to Buddhist services and demonstrates reverence in a unique way.
The writing style is defined by its hasty execution and use of often continuous, trailing strokes which scarcely break within each character. The strokes, however, barely stretch into the next character on the same line. This distinction is adopted from the traditional format seen in the Tang dynasty (618–907) work, Preface to Sagely Teachings in Wang Xizhi’s Calligraphy. There is also apparent influence from Wen Zhengming as can be seen in the way the strokes were written with the sharp tip of the brush landing first, and also through the proliferation of fine, yet stiff strokes. Despite the quick turns and sweeps, there is a visible order to the cursive script, attributed to Ling’s adeptness as well as the hard work behind his skillful mastery.
